Chemistry rarely (ever?) gets the literary treatment it deserves. Most readers encounter the periodic table once, memorise a few rules about valence and electron shells, and then file the whole business away as the dullest room in the house of science. Sam Kean's debut sets out to reopen that room, fling the curtains back, and reveal that the tenants have been leading astonishing secret lives all along.

The book's premise is disarmingly simple. Each element on the periodic table has a story, and Kean has spent the better part of his adult life collecting them. The gallium spoon of the title is a bar trick: mould a spoon from the metal, serve it alongside hot tea, and watch your unsuspecting guest stir their drink into a puddle. This is the spirit of the book in miniature, playful, a little mischievous, and quietly insistent that the material world is stranger than anyone bothered to tell you in school.

What makes it work is Kean's instinct for the human story behind the science. Marie Curie's radium very nearly cost her a reputation. Lewis and Clark left a trail of mercury laxatives across the American West, their campsites still detectable by the poison in the soil. Maria Goeppert-Mayer won a Nobel Prize while being systematically sidelined by men less talented than she was. Gandhi harboured a lifelong grudge against iodine. These are not footnotes dressed up as anecdotes, they are the spine of the book, and Kean trusts them to carry real scientific weight. Electron orbitals, isotopes, the oddities of semiconductor behaviour, all of this comes through clearly, even for readers whose brains have historically refused to grasp any of it.

The prose is warm and confiding rather than lecturing, full of the kind of small jokes that suggest a writer genuinely delighted by his subject. There is a rhythm to the chapters, a uniformity of length, a sense that Kean is pacing the reader with some care. It is the opposite of a textbook, and better for it.

The book is not without its weaker stretches. The structure is more associative than systematic, and the momentum can stall when Kean wanders too far from the central through-line. A reader looking for a disciplined history of chemistry, organised by discovery or by scientific principle, will find the jumps between periods and personalities disorienting. Occasionally the sheer volume of anecdote starts to feel like pocket trivia rather than argument, and the title itself, gallium, gets only a glancing mention despite its billing on the cover.

These are real limitations, but they do not sink the book. What Kean has made is a tour, not a textbook, and tours are allowed to meander. By the final pages, the periodic table looks less like a chart to be memorised and more like a map of human curiosity, ambition, and accident. That is a genuine achievement, and a rare one.
